How to Build Backlinks for Your Small Business (Without Spam)
How to Build Backlinks for Your Small Business
Backlinks are links from other websites to yours. Google treats them as votes of confidence. But most small businesses either ignore backlinks or build spammy ones that get them penalized.
What NOT to do
- Buy backlinks (Google will penalize you)
- Use link farms or PBNs
- Comment on blogs just to drop your link
- Exchange links with unrelated sites
What TO do
1. Get listed in local directories Yelp, Facebook, BBB, chamber of commerce, industry associations. These are easy, legitimate backlinks.
2. Partner with complementary businesses A plumber partners with a real estate agent. A wedding photographer partners with a florist. Cross-promote and link to each other.
3. Get mentioned in local news Send press releases when you open, expand, hire, or do something noteworthy. Local news sites have high domain authority.
4. Create linkable content Original research, local guides, helpful tools. Content that other sites want to reference.
5. Guest post on relevant blogs Write for industry blogs, local business blogs, or chamber of commerce sites. One quality guest post is worth 1,000 spammy links.
6. Sponsor local events or teams Most event and team websites link to their sponsors.
