How to Track Your SEO Progress: The 5 Metrics That Actually Matter
How to Track Your SEO Progress
Most people track the wrong things. Rankings. Domain authority. Backlink count. Here's what actually matters.
1. Organic traffic (Google Search Console)
Are more people finding you through Google? This is the #1 metric. If it's going up, SEO is working.
2. Keyword rankings for money terms
Don't track 100 keywords. Track 5-10 that actually bring customers. 'Emergency plumber Austin' matters. 'History of plumbing' doesn't.
3. Click-through rate (CTR)
Are people clicking your result when they see it? Low CTR = bad title or description. Fix it.
4. Conversions from organic search
Phone calls. Form submissions. Online orders. Direction requests. If these go up, SEO is working. If they don't, rankings don't matter.
5. Google Business Profile insights
How many people viewed your profile? Called you? Requested directions? These are direct revenue signals.
What NOT to obsess over
- Domain Authority (made-up metric)
- Total backlinks (quality > quantity)
- Rankings for irrelevant keywords
- 'SEO score' without context
